Tom at Work
Tom is a boy who lived with his Aunt Polly. He loved to go out and have fun, and hated going to school. Aunt Polly worried about Tom. SHe worried that he skipped school too much. She knew he would skip school this afternoon.
"I'll have to punish him tomorrow," Aunt Polly decided. "I'll make him work."
It was a beutiful Saturday morning. Tom was on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled brush. He thought of all the excitement he was missing.
Suddenly Tom saw Ben Rogers coming down the street. He had a plan. He pretended to enjoy whitewashing as if it was the most fun thing to do in the whole world!
Ben begged Tom to let him have a try. He even offered Tom his apple. The plan worked!
After Ben, Billy Fisher came along. Billy gave Tom a good kite for a turn at white-washing. Then there was Johnny Miller. He gave Tom a dead rat. And so on and so on, hour after hour.
Tom finished the work! Aunt Polly couldn't believe it! Tom ran outside to play with his friends and enjoyed the rest of Saturday.
The New Girl
Monday came, and Tom hated school. There was only one good reason to go to school - new girl in town!
On the way Tom met Huckleberry Finn. Huck's father drank too much and didn't care what Huck did. Huck never had to wash or put on clean clothes. He could fish or swim whenever he wanted.
Tom was late for school, and was assigned to sit near the new girl, Becky. He wrote "I love you" in his plate and showed to Becky. Becky turned red.
But soon, Tom accidentally told Becky about his last "engagement" with another girl. Becky was hurt and angry.
Murder at Midnight
Huck and Tom sneaked out and headed to the graveyard.
Suddenly Tom heard muffled voice. A light came into view. The voices grew louder. Then the boys saw three figures coming towards them!
Tom and Huch hid quitely in the shadows and watched the men. They witnessned a murder! Injun Joe killed Doc Robinson!
The boys went back to town. An Innocent man Muff Potter was held in jail for the murder. But the boys sweared to keep the secret of what they saw because they were afraid that Injun Joe would come after them.
Muff Potter's Trial
Back to school, Becky was still angry with Tom. Tom saved Becky from teacher's punishment, and Becky was suprised and grateful. As he passed her desk, she whispered, "Tom, you are so noble!"
Finally school was over for the year. It was also time for Muff Potter's trail. The whole town was talking about it.
On the day of the trail no one stood up for Muff Potter. Tom knew he had to do something to help Potter.
Afther the lunch break, Potter's lawyer announced to the court, "Thomas Sawyer is taking the stand!"
Tom told the court about the murder he witnessed.
Crash! Injun Joe had jumped through the courtroom window. He was gone!
Buried Treasure
Tom became a hero! Tom's days were wonderful. But his nights were horrible. Everynight he dreamed that Joe was after him!
The sheriff and the townspeople searched for Joe. But no one found him. He had vanished!
One day Tom wanted to look for buried treasure. Huck was all for it. They decided to try the haunted house on Cardiff Hill.
The boys dug and dug in the haunted house.
Suddenly, Tom heard a noise.
The boys lay on the floor and peered through a knothole. Two men were entering the house!
"There's a box buried here," Tom heard a voice. "Give me a hand. Let's see what's inside."
The voice from one of the men was Injun Joe's!
Joe reached into the box and pulled out a handful of gold coins!
Two men decided to hide their loot to Joe's den, and left.
Tom and Huck climbed to the ground and went home.
Lost!
Tom had to find Joe's gold. So he asked HUck to watch the tarvern, follow Joe and find out where the loot was hidden.
And Huck did find it! Huck couldn't wait to tell Tom about it. But Tom had gone on a picnic with Becky, and they never came back!
Tom and Becky were lost in the cave.
"Oh, Tom, we didn't mark our trail!" cried Becky.
"The passage are all mixed up, Becky!" said Tom. "I'm not sure how long we'll be stuck here. We better burn one candle and save the other for later."
Tom watched Becky's face. He didn't know what to do. How would they ever find their way home?
Found!
Tom and Becky walked hand in hand. They didn't know which way to go. They just kept walking.
Suddenly Tom said, "Shh! Did you her that?"
"Someone's coming to get us, Becky," Tom said. "We'll be all right!"
Around the corner they saw faint candlelight. Someone appeared from behind a rock.
Tom froze. It was Injun Joe!
But Injun Joe didn't see them. They quitely turned back.
Finally, at the end of a passage, Tom and Becky saw a small hole in the cave wall.
Tom pished his head and shoulders through the hole. The Mississippi River was rolling by!
Some men came by. Tom and Becky told them their story. The men found it hard to believe.
Tom and Becky were back! They were safe!
Judge Thatcher, Becky's father thought Tom was the bravest boy alive!
"Oh, judge," said Tom. "Injoe Joe's in that cave!"
The townpeople sealed the cave after the children came back. When they opened the iron door, they found Joe on the ground. He was dead.
After Joe's funeral, Tom found Huck. Tom knew where the treasure was hidden!
Gold!
Tom and Huck were in the cave. The boys started to dig. Huck uncovered some boards and removed them. The box was in it!
The box was very heavy. The boys put the money in two small sacks and left the cave.
When they got back to the town, people were waiting for them.
"We're here to hornor you two brave boys." A widow said. "I want Huck to live with me. He will go to school. And when he gets older I'll start him up in business."
So Huck went live with the widow and she held Huck's money for him. The widow made Huck take baths and eat hearlthy meals. He was sent to church and to school.
Poor Huck didn't like his new life. He ran away after three weeks!
One day, Tom found Huck and told him about his new plan to be a robber. Their exciting adventures would never stop...
